Abstract (up to 300 words to describe your proposal)

I've been active in Wikimedia Commons for 10 years, and with 400 Featured Pictures and 10,000 Quality Images I've been one of the key contributors of HQ content in the project (here you can read a bit more about me). Unfortunately the level of frustration has become so high that in March I decided to stop contributing to the project for diverse reasons that I've mainly listed here. I wouldn't like to leave things like this and for that I need help from the Foundation and Community to move forward. Actually, it isn't just me who needs help, but rather the current photographer's community in Commons and yet those to come. I can affirm that as I've intersified exchange about this topic in the last weeks and see that the issues I list are affecting most people to some extent. My proposal would be a 10 minutes presentation about the main problems I observe and then start an open discussion with representatives of the Foundation (including lawyers), the Wikipedia projects, Wikimedia Commons, as well as Commons photographers about what can be done to improve things. There is no doubt that the community wants and expects high quality content in Wikimedia Commons and that is mainly generated by a small community of photographers, who do actually need help. Instead of making life to these guys difficult we should put Wikimedia Commons in the map of photographer's communities like shutterstock, 500px or Flickr and attract photographers to Commons to the cause of this movement instead of getting those frustrated who belong to it.

What will attendees take away from this session?

What I hope that attendees take with them is some of the following

  • Personal experience of a long-term HQ photographer in Commons about what is going wrong.
  • Awareness of all the battles a photographer has to fight to contribute in the movement.
  • Insight about the point of view from the different involved parties regarding HQ media in the project.
  • Common view about the long-term strategy of Wikimedia Commons (will bring a couple of proposals to start with).
  • Agreement on a row of measures that are needed to support the photographer's community in Commons.
