- Abstract
Last year at the Wikimania I held a lecture about Wikipedia addiction and its comorbidities. Directly after the presentation, but also in the weeks and months to follow, many Wikipedians and Wikimedians contacted me and showed interest in the topic. I had many interesting conversations per chat and mail, did some outside reading and a lot of thinking. So I want to start with a new round of direct exchange here and discuss the following questions:
- Why is the mental health of people contributing to the Wikimedia projects an issue that should be discussed?
- Do you think or have any evidence, that the mental health of contributors has any impact on their work within the Wikimedia projects?
- Does working on Wikimedia projects have any influence on mental health?
- Can we as a community influence the impact working on the project has on the mental healths of others?
- Are projects like Wikitherapy any good?
- Or is working on Wikimedia projects bad for the mental health of some contributors? (think about topics like addiction, harassment etc.)
- Do we have the responsibility to work on having a positive impact? If yes - are we taking that responsibility seriously enough?
- What will attendees take away from this session?
I do hope they will take away a whole lot of new questions! I want to encourage all attendees to think more in depth, but also on a broader scale about all connections between the mental health of contributors to Wikimedia projects and the projects themselves.
