Abstract

Sometimes, it seems like everyone in the world knows about Wikipedia. But that’s not the case. According to recent phone surveys, just 11% of people in Iraq have heard of Wikipedia. In Nigeria, it’s 23%. Lack of name recognition challenges the Wikimedia movement's ability to invite new readers, contributors, and advocates to join our communities. If you don't know about Wikipedia, how can you use it and contribute to it?

Now, promotional efforts from Community groups and Foundation staff in Iraq and Nigeria are working to raise Wikipedia awareness. From national video ads to student events, we are piloting approaches to explaining and promoting Wikipedia to new users. In this session, we will review how to raise awareness for Wikipedia. We’ll show video ads, promotional banners, and share our best practices for doing your own promotional work.
