From Wikimania

Hi, this is a page for on-wiki preparation for my workshop on building teams. I'd like to collect feedback an wishes for the agenda, if you have any. See below:

About the workshop: introduction

A group of people is not necessarily a team. This is why there are thousands of books and tutorials on teams and how they work. Who does what? And why? Who gets to decide what to do? How to communicate? And, very importantly, how to reach the goals you set yourselves? This workshop will give answers to these questions – specifically looking at the context of the Wikimedia movement. Typically, team-building and management advice focuses on paid staff and corporate structures, but in our movement the term "team" may mean much more. The workshop offers different perspectives on different team challenges:

  • joining a team of volunteers
  • (co-)creating a team of volunteers
  • joining a mixed team of volunteers and paid staff
  • (co-)creating a mixed team of volunteers and paid staff
  • joining a staffed team
  • building a staffed team
  • hiring people

Any or all of the above subjects are available to be worked on. However, attendees may discuss their preferences and expectations on-wiki, before Wikimania, and the workshop agenda will be designed accordingly. In short, participants will decide about the thematic focus.

Preferences? (see above bullet points)

Hey, you missed something in your selection of topics, let's talk about

Dismantling your team neatly: only you can prevent mailing list fires!

  • Not exactly an option above, but something along « (co-)creating a team with different people » (paid and non-paid, top-power-users and newbies, technic and non-technical people, different cultural background), I know diversity is per se and obviously a good thing but it is also often quite challenging and it required a lot of smoothing. If there is some tips, Id' like to know them.
(caveat: I'm not 100% sure I can make it to this workshop, there is a lot of good workshop at the same timeslot...). Cdlt, VIGNERON (talk) 11:34, 15 July 2017 (UTC)
Differences between people, different backgrounds, roles, cultural backgrounds, yes. Good point! --Michael Jahn WMDE (talk) 14:40, 17 July 2017 (UTC)
