The Monuments database, created as part of Wiki Loves Monuments is most likely the world’s largest database of built cultural heritage. It consists of over 90 datasets from over 60 countries.
Until 2017 this incredible dataset was maintained by a small group of volunteers. As part of the Connected Open Heritage project Wikimedia Sverige worked with the volunteer team with moving as much data as possible onto Wikidata. Increasing resilience and making it easier for others to reuse the data, as well as making it possible to use Wikidata tools to visualize the dataset.
During the talk we will share the process we developed for uploading massive amounts of data under time pressure, what worked and what we struggled with. We will cover both the technical, social and legal considerations we dealt with.
