The WikiMOOC is a MOOC – a free Massive Online Open Course – designed to engage people in discovering Wikipedia and learning how to edit it. Two successful sessions (in 2016 and 2017) were conducted on the French version of Wikipedia, bringing together more than 10,000 attendees, including hundreds of now active editors. In this talk, the teaching team who designed the WikiMOOC wants to share its experience with the whole Wikimedia movement. In particular, we will introduce the challenges we faced and the associated questions:

  • Why was a MOOC created?
  • How did the teaching team (about 10 active Wikipedians) design the WikiMOOC with the support of Wikimedia France?
  • What are the main results and lessons learned from the two WikiMOOC sessions?

Initial findings from the first session showed that the WikiMOOC was quite successful in reaching underrepresented people on Wikipedia. In particular 36% of the attendees were female, 20% were Africans, and 43% were aged 50 and above. This provides initial evidence that MOOCs can be leveraged to promote diversity within our projects.

In the second part of the talk, we will discuss how to adapt, reuse and/or translate the WikiMOOC in other languages and for other Wikimedia projects (e.g., Commons). We identified several challenges that we believe need to be addressed to ease the design of multiple Wikimedia-related MOOCs, among which expensive MOOC hosting platforms, lack of integration among those platforms and MediaWiki, and little community support. To address such issues, we envision to design a dedicated Wikimedia MOOC platform that could effectively host MOOCs and online courses related to the Wikimedia movement and its projets. We will explain the rationale for building such platform, how we plan to collect needs from all Wikimedia actors (chapters, Wikimedians, etc.), and how to join the project.

  • pourquoi faire un MOOC ;
  • comment l'équipe pédagogique, constituée d'une dizaine de contributeurs-trices bénévoles, s'est organisée le temps de la création du MOOC (huit mois), avec le support de Wikimédia France ;

What will attendees take away from this session?

You will learn how we achieved the creation of our two WikiMOOC sessions, the essential steps we went through, the problems we faced and some take home useful tips if you want to create or use the MOOC in your own language or project.

  3. Trizek (talk), in English please, to share the experience; Francophone people can have detailed information anytime ;)
    @Trizek: FIY, we asked a question about translation here. But I agree with you: if there is no translation, doing the lecture in English is the best option ;-). Jules WMFr (talk) 14:45, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    As you prefer Jules WMFr. But do you really need to convince Francophone people about a MOOC that has already been done twice in this language? :) Trizek (talk) 16:52, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    Well why dont we envisage doing it in both language?
    This morning, we had an idea: we can do the lecture in French (it appears that Wikimania organizers want some lectures in French) and have subtitles in English on a slideshow. It could be an innovative way to do the conference. Jules WMFr (talk) 15:17, 22 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    I'm afraid it will be less interactive. :/ Trizek (talk) 16:07, 23 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    I have to agree with Trizek, in particular given that Nattes can do the talk in English (yay!) However, would it be possible to give the talk twice (once in English and once in French as part of a dedicated French session/workshop?) Binabik (talk) 06:23, 25 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
