The Technical Collaboration team's annual plan for 2017-18 is to bring a new wave of developers to our projects, with a particular focus on exploring new groups and geographies to diversify our developer community. As a first step, we are planning on gathering a shared understanding of why new developers get attracted towards contributing to our software projects, what challenges they face in this process, and why they plan to stick or leave our community. There will be a research study taking place between May and July with the participants of current and previous rounds of Google Summer of Code and Outreachy to deepen our understanding of this topic, through a feedback survey and 1:1 interviews. We would like to share the results of this study with the community at Wikimania. We would also like to share our next steps for overcoming some of these challenges that we learned about in the study.
