Abstract (up to 300 words to describe your proposal)
For most editors, copyright law is perplexing. Copyright is a property right granted to the creator of an original work which allows them to control how their work is used. Both copyright law and local policies require most content reproduced on Wikimedia projects to either be free of copyright or offered under a suitable free license.
In this presentation, I will discuss the policies regarding copyright on the English Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. I will focus primarily on images. Topics will include which free licenses are appropriate for use on Wikimedia projects and how to tell whether a work is in the public domain (meaning free of copyright restrictions in a particular country). Time permitting, I will also briefly cover more advanced topics including derivative works, freedom of panorama, threshold of originality, and de minimis. Attendees will be directed toward a variety of resources on the English Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Commons which will assist them in determining the copyright status of a particular work.
What will attendees take away from this session?
Attendees will leave with an understanding of what copyright is and how it affects the Wikimedia projects. They should be able to identify suitable and unsuitable licenses for images as well as whether an image is in the public domain. Time permitting, attendees will learn to identify when they should be concerned with issues such as derivative works, freedom of panorama, threshold of originality, and de minimis, although they may not be fully able to deal with more advanced copyright issues themselves. They should also know where to seek help relating to copyright on certain Wikimedia projects.
