- Abstract (up to 300 words to describe your proposal)
- New Editor Experiences is a research and development project at the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) which seeks to learn more about the experiences and backgrounds of new Wikipedia editors in order to suggest strategies, such as software development or community programs, for increasing their retention and success. In particular, Editing department will rely on this research to guide its work on its annual plan effort to increase new editor success.
- In May and June, a research team will travel to the Czech Republic and South Korea in order to interview around 80 new contributors to the Czech and Korean Wikipedias face-to-face. These interviews will explore the contributors' personal backgrounds, technical and social contexts, attitudes towards Wikipedia, motivations for editing, and experiences when attempting to edit.
- In addition, the team will seek to interview experienced contributors who often interact with new contributors (such as by leading editathons, patrolling for vandalism, reviewing new pages, or mentoring new editors) in order to understand their experiences carrying out those roles.
- This presentation will discuss the trends the research team observed among the new contributors and their applicability to Wikipedias generally, proposals for strengthening positive patterns and mitigating negative ones, and the successes and failures of the research project itself.
- What will attendees take away from this session?
