The project is the Music in Canada @ 150 is a project that is activating librarians, archivists, scholars, students, musicians and others involved in cultural heritage to create content in Wikipedia and Wikidata. The project does not simply focus on content creation but also seeks to specifically create structured data and advance a number of goals, including educating various communities about the power of structured data, the need to advocate for openness, activate a the library community and to expose the lack of easily-available content on Canadian music on the web.
We (Stacy, music librarian, and Dan, systems librarian) will talk the specific challenges of certain music communities, such as traditional music communities where there is less of an emphasis on "works." The project includes a train the trainers' workshop that will be held in May, the development of training materials and will culminate is a distributed edit-a-thon in October that will stretch from “sea to sea to sea.”
We will talk about the ways we feel this project can work as an advocacy tool for modelling inclusive modes of working, advance goals of both libraries, arts organisations and the Wikipedia community, and open conversations about the ways and the challenges of working across a large geographic area, challenges and opportunities in working with organisations of various sizes and challenges of language and culture.
