- Abstract (up to 300 words to describe your proposal)
Wikipedia, and most other wikis, consists nearly exclusively of text, tables and pictures. Videos are rare, and a lot of those that are embedded in articles are historical films or very short animations. In contrast, making videos became easier and more affordable in the last years.
The panel gathers Wikipedians and other activists in order to answer these questions:
- Why are there so few videos on Wikipedia?
- Is video a suitable format for an encyclopedia? Does it add value to an article?
- What makes a video peticularly 'encyclopedic'? For example, should it be accompanied with music?
- Which or what kind of videos are suitable for which or what kind of articles? What is a proper relationship between article text and video?
- How to make or keep video editable? How to deal with multilingual audiences?
- How to find other enthusiasts who want to join you?
- Are there other organizations that are interested, like film schools?
This is not a course or discussion about producing videos in general, although related questions might come up.
- What will attendees take away from this session?
The primary goal is to learn more about this peticular kind of videography. Possibly the adience is inspired to start producing videos, or build up facilitating structure in their countries.
