The Eighth Annual Wikimania LGBT+ Meetup, at Wikimania 2017 in Montreal, will bring together LGBT+ Wikimedians and other interested parties from all around the globe for two events. All are welcome at this meetup, which will be a friendly-space discussion with a proposed, but no fixed agenda.

There are going to be two separate events:

  1. Meeting at the conference hotel
    • Time: Friday, August 11, 18:15–18:45
    • Location: Le Centre Sheraton, Drummond East
  2. Meeting at BAnQ (off-site)
    • Time: Saturday, August 12, 15:00 as long as it takes (up to 17:00), with an optional activity 13:00–15:00 (registration required for the optional activity, see under “Other Events” below)
    • Location: BAnQ Vieux-Montréal (Gilles-Hocquart Building), Room 2.28 (close to Montreal’s gay village)
    • a group will be setting out from the conference hotel at 14:30—meet at the hotel front door

WM-LGBT events and processes need to be able to include Wikimedians living in countries where public participation in an LGBT group may put them at risk of harassment or prosecution. Respecting choices of anonymity and confidentiality will remain a necessary part of how WM-LGBT operates.
  • Harassment and discrimination within the Wikimedia movement; prevention vs. reaction. What is the WMF doing and what are they not doing?
  • Communication/collaboration methods for international/multilingual LGBT wikimedia projects

Wikipedia for Peace would like to organize a trip to World Pride 2019 in NYC. Open questions:

Wikipedia for Peace would like to organise a summer camp in Austria next year where people from all over the world come together to write articles about LGBT activists (similar to this year's camp, where participants wrote about female peace activists in 15 languages; see meta:Wikipedia for Peace Jenbach 2017/Article lists). Feel free to contact User:Shikeishu, if you're interested to be one of the 15 participants or to co-organise.

Wiki Loves Pride, mostly on enwiki, more than 150 articles created or improved in 2017. Successful in the USA, but seemingly less popular in Europe. There is interest to organize an activity in Queensland, Australia, though.
How supportive are non-US chapters of LGBT+ initiatives?

  • Australia: very
Generally, send notifications to Wikiprojects (based on topic/geography), and send email chapter mailing lists.

Pride-parade imagery on Commons?

  • World Pride Madrid
  • Pride NYC
  • Sydney Mardi Gras might be worth covering.

Where does this imagery go?

  • Commons categories are well-stocked.
  • Articles often less so:
    • Brighton Pride is underrepresented.
    • several pride-related dewiki articles

Wiki float for pride parades?

Wikimedia Serbia: Reaching out to local LGBT+ organizations for events and initiatives is challenging.

Safety issues around photos:

  • Photograph people from the back.
  • Consider face-recognition systems pose challenges.
    • Even crowd shots can be dangerous.
    • Would, given general-media coverage, caution on the part of Wikimedia, even make a dent?
  • Consider outing issues.
  • Cf. naked bikerides.
  • However, it’s still important to capture and cover events. Can a protocol be established regarding taking and uploading (or taking down) photos?
    • on a case-by-case basis, photos have been taken down
    • blurring could be an option
  • license questions
    • CC licenses cannot be revoked. Is that a flaw?
      • Would a license that recognizes take-down requests for safety purposes even be enforceable outside of Commons?
  • Continue discussion on LGBT+ user group.

Rather than focusing on coverage glamourous parades, improve coverage of local LGBT+ pioneers and places that are more relevant to the local communities.

  • However, check first if the persons and places in questions are out and safe.

Mailing list:

  • Facebook group is seen as more convenient.
  • Telegram was considered much safer at WMCon.
    • A group already exists.
  • Whatsapp does not seem to be liked.
  • Security should be taken into consideration.
  • One single solution is unlikely to satisfy and reach everyone.
  • Promote via Twitter.
