Summary

Description
English: Mobilisation of local people and technology in mapping for the Sierra Leone Ebola epidemic response.

Laura Nic Lochlainn, European Programme for Intervention Epidemiology Training (EPIET), explains why the difficulty in rapidly locating villages of Ebola cases and their contacts is often due to: villages with similar names in different chiefdoms, villages with alternate names and missing locations of recent villages and satellite villages. The aim of the project was to improve mapping within the Tonkolli district by mobilising local people in order to obtain reliable geographical information to trace Ebola cases and their contacts. Through the groups findings she explains how they required modest investment to gather large-scale geographic and population data rapidly. Benefits stem from the ability to use locally-appropriate technology in genuine partnership with local people and could be used for future emergencies to improve response efforts.
